The Internet as a whole is built on the basic principle of the domain, which means every web-page on the internet has its own unique domain. If you intend to own a blog/website you must have read somewhere that you cannot do so without a domain address, be it high-level domain or sub-domain. In this post, I will be explaining the meaning of domain, domain name, sub-domain. In other to fully understand how the internet works, one has to fully understand how domain works and it's important to websites/blogs. I will start by defining what a Domain is, thereafter give examples of a high-level domain.

WHAT IS A DOMAIN?

In simple terms, Domain is the general category that a computer on the internet belongs to. A domain is also a collection of DNS (Domain Name System/Services) consisting of a delegated domain name and all its sub-domain. In data processing, it is a form of technical metadata that represents the type of data item, its characteristics, name, and Usage. 

In networking, this is a logical grouping of users and resources; grouped together for ease of administration and security purpose. The most common high-level domain are;

.com:    a commercial organization
.edu:    an education establishment
.gov:    a branch of a government of a country or state
.int:     an international organization
.mil:    a branch of the military
.net:     a network
.org:    a non-profit organization

Most countries have unique domains named after their international abbreviation. Example .ng for Nigeria, .uk for the United Kingdom, .ca for Canada… amongst others.

WHAT IS SUBDOMAIN?

In computing, a subdomain is a domain name that has been prefaced with additional parts. In another term, it is a domain name that is hosted on another domain. The most common top domain hosts are;

.blogspot.com:      For blogger websites
.wordpress.com:    For web pages hosted on the WordPress platform.

joomla.com          For Joomla Website

Although subdomain works in the same way as a high-level domain. It is, however, advisable for individuals or organizations to own their own high-level domain, as it gives your business a professional Look and feel.

WHAT IS DOMAIN NAME? IMPORTANCE IN BLOGGING

Domain Name: The (easy-to-understand) name given to an Internet host computer, as opposed to the numerical IP address. Or, it is a unique, case-insensitive, name (consisting of a string made up of alphanumeric characters and dashes separated by periods), that the DNS maps to IP numbers and other information. Also, a domain name is an identifier of a computer or site on the internet.

Importance Of Having A Domain Name

1.     It gives Your blog a professional look: It is said that the first impression matters a lot. If you are still using a sub-domain address, people tend not to take you seriously. And it also sends away potential advertisers.

      3.     It gives you easy access to be approved by Ads Network: A custom domain name not only makes your blog address easy to remember but also makes Ads networks (like Google Ads, Propeller Ads, Bidvertiser, Infolinks, etc)  easily approve you. As most Ad networks don’t approve blogs on a subdomain.
